Parchment manuscripts are extremely durable in the right conditions, but they are not invulnerable to ageing. Moist conditions can cause mould growth on documents while they will distort and become brittle if they get too dry, sunlight can cause yellowing and loss of flexibility and acidic pollution in the atmosphere will also degrade them (Haines, 1999, pp. 28-29). Even the ink itself can damage the parchment by leaching acid into it (Pronti et al., 2018, p. 2). Digitisation and analytical techniques are important to record the charters and identify their components to reveal information about their manufacturing techniques and potential conservation problems.
