The Lincoln Charters Project, by the City of Lincoln Council in partnership with the University of Lincoln, aims to preserve, record and analyse the city’s collection of royal charters, which represent four centuries of history involving 25 kings: “The manuscripts reflect the city’s great importance in medieval times as the capital of England’s largest diocese” (University of Lincoln, 2018). This website documents the investigation of the charter of King Henry VI from the 13th of March, 1447. Because there were no specific or pressing research questions relating to the conservation of the charters or their authenticity that could be answered by analysis, damaging such historically important documents to obtain samples could not be justified (Quye & Strlič, 2019), so only non-destructive investigative techniques were employed.
